美国“数学大联盟杯赛”决赛和夏令营部分教授简介 - Dr. Mark Saul

Mark Saul, Ph.D., has touched the lives of thousands of students through his work as a teacher and author, administrator, editor, and translator. He has served as Director of Competitions for the Mathematical Association of America, bringing joyous competition to almost half a million students worldwide. In his previous position, as Executive Director of the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival, he promoted non-competitive after-school events offering high-level, unusual mathematics to students of any age and any level of expertise.

Saul has been President of the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML), Director of the Research Science Institute, and editor of Quantum (the Russian/American journal of mathematics and physics for high ability students) and The Mathematics Teacher for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He has also consulted abroad for mathematical organizations in Russia, Bulgaria, Taiwan, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Botswana, and India. He has served as chief guide and coordinator for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) since 1981, and directed the Center for Mathematical Talent, an outreach program of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University.

He served as consultant in gifted education for the John Templeton Foundation and program officer for the National Science Foundation. In this last position he directed the funding of teacher education and curriculum development programs, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. He was a recipient of this award in 1984, the highest honor in the US for classroom teaching.

The programs Mark Saul has initiated include a student exchange program between Russian and American students, an “Intel/Westinghouse” style competition for students of mathematics in China, internship programs for high school students in the US, Botswana, Bulgaria, Shanghai, and Saudi Arabia, and specifically for girls in New York City. He helped develop a mathematical Olympiad program for minorities based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has served as a board member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and a member of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board for the National Research Council. His publications include 12 books and numerous articles, including a elementary text on trigonometry, Trigonometry co-authored with I.M. Gelfand, a translation and 'reader's companion' for Jacques Hadamard's Elementary Geometry, and “The Peak in the Middle”, a guide for work with mathematically gifted middle school students, published by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
